News Release 3 Houston, Texas - June 19, 2010 For immediate release: Hoff Lu's 96th Anniversary of Birth June 7th was the 96th anniversary of the birth of Hoff Lu. The memory of his honor encourages the integrity of Chinese scholars. His family, people who knew him, and people who knew of him, still gather together to commemorate his life. On June 18th Hoff Lu's daughter-in-law Kathyleen Ma came to Houston to attend the 10th North American Jiao Tong University Alumni Reunion held Saturday the 19th. Some 500 alumni attended the gathering which has been held every five years since its first session in New York in 1965. She was once again elected as Chairwoman. One of the first things on Kathyleen's agenda was to bring a flower basket to Hoff Lu's sculpture in Houston First Baptist Academy. Joining her at the dedication in the Hoff Lu Science Lab was the Honorable Consul General of Sweden Jan B. Dryselius, Mike Lu and his wife Patricia Maxin. After the dedication, friend William Morris joined the group for lunch and to welcome Kathyleen to Houston. Kathyleen also sent a flower basket to John Lu's grave to pay her respects. On May 27th, an interview with former President Prof. Hu Si-de of the China Academy of Engineering Physics by Fudan University Alumni Association Shanghai, was published on their web site. Prof. Hu was a student in the Fudan Physics Department in 1958 and was the head of the Chinese Nuclear Project. He also was famous mysterious Chinese physicist in "Cox Report". Prof. Hu recalled how Hoff Lu gave guidance in creating the method of the cosmic ray test with self-made air bubble chamber. This guidance was very important in his career to find new concepts in nuclear physics. He said that Hoff Lu' guidance was not only for the test but also to encourage us to have independent minds, to have a pioneering spirit, to make your own way, your own research, your own design. These recollections by Prof. Hu showed more and more the positive influence of Hoff Lu in China's nuclear circle. There is an article by Lester Lu "Hoff Lu and the Atomic Bomb" with an editors note mentioning that is for the 96th anniversary of the birth of Hoff Lu. The article was originally written by Lester and Fudan University Alumni Association and published in Fudan Tribe No 3, Sept 2009. Shanghai, China-April 3, 2010 For immediate release: In Memory of Hoff Lu Yesterday, Good Friday, and also Holocaust Remembrance Day season in Chinese tradition, Lester and his wife Kathyleen, Hoff Lu' grandsons Lense and Keshi, friend Ming Zhang, and several other family friends, visited the graves of Hoff Lu, his wife Gloria Wu, and fourth son Yongjiang Lu at Tian Ma Mountain Cemetery between Shanghai and Hangzhou. Their memory lasts generation after generation. A month ago, on Feb 13th, Mike sent a basket of flowers to set by Hoff Lu's sculpture in Houston First Baptist Academy in remembrance of the 12th anniversary of his death, with the words, "You always live in our hearts."
A handbook has been published recently, "The Story of Famous Professors" by Fudan University and Fu Dan Qing Yun Hotel. The very first photo and story is Hoff Lu and his amazing life. It recounts the time during the anti-Japanese war in 1944 when Hoff Lu and the faculty of Guang Xi University were evacuating the college to evade the advancing Japanese army. The group was robbed by bandits at the Yuanbao Mountain inland of China. But Hoff Lu convinced the bandits to spare their lives. The head of bandits Wang Song-lin even had a good meal they dedicated to Hoff Lu because he left the Heaven of the USA to come back to the Hell of China in wartime.
The handbook describes Hoff Lu as the father of nuclear energy of China on the inside of the cover page. His great career and role model we will never forget. Shanghai. China - December 31, 2009 For immediate release:
2009 will be a memorable year for the 95th anniversary of the birth of Hoff Lu. The article "Hoff Lu, Vision of Peace and Glory" by Lester Lu and Fudan University Alumni Association was published in the magazine Fudan Tribe, Vol. 3 September 2009. It included historical photos of Hoff Lu and positive editor's comments that the most important decision of Hoff Lu's life was that his nuclear career should be used only for World Peace. The historical deluxe photo album "Across Time - 60 Years of Brilliant Science and Technology in Shanghai" by the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, published in December, included three photos of Hoff Lu with positive comments by the editor who said "Hoff Lu was the opener of China Nuclear Physics" and emphasized why he is the father of nuclear energy in China. Hoff Lu's words "Matter Regularity (Chinese traditional physics) means searching and learning the truth forever" were listed as the topic. The photos included Premier Zhou En-lai meeting with Hoff Lu and other scientists 46 years ago. On Nov 13th the 100th Hoff Lu Forum of the Beijing Relativity Theory Research Federation (BRTRF) was held in Beijing. 51 science articles were reported and listed on the program and magazine "Matter Regularity". To welcome Dean Steven Crouch of UM to visit Mike's house in Houston of the U.S., his wife Patricia designed a door decoration which the Houston Chronicle photographed and displayed on the cover of the Life section on Oct. 10th as part of their fall scenes of the city. Prof. Sen Wen-Zhou of Zhejiang University passed away on Oct 21st. He was a famous Propriety Generation Master and father of Prof. Shen Shi, Vice Chairwoman of our institute (HLRIMRS). In 1952 Prof. Lai with Hoff Lu were transferred from Zhejiang University in Hangzhou to Fudan University in Shanghai as a graduate student. In 1956 he lead to make first computer Fudan 601 in China. In 1959 he helped Hoff Lu establish the Atomic Energy Department (Second Department of Physics) for MeV Electron Induction Accelerator and 25MeV Electrostatic Accelerator. In 1962 he was assigned by the China Academy of Engineering Physics to the 596 Nuke project as the chief engineer. He lead to build the Chinese first Fast Neutron Sub-Criticality Device and Criticality Device. His book "Nuclear Physics Electronics Method" was published in 1961, which was first in the field for the nuclear profession and was a very popular handbook for Chinese Nuke Society. Prof. Lai was decent pioneer and nuclear electronic physicist but never became a member of CAS although he certainly deserved to be.

Lester and his wife drove thousands of miles to the former Zhejiang University, located inland in western China, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of formal campus in the anti-Japanese war on June 27, 2009. "Old Residence of Lu Hefu" (Hoff Lu's Chinese spelling): A three-floor European classic architecture built in 1930. Lu Jinggui (1891-1967), born in Shandong, an expert specialized in traffic communication in Northeast China, an astronomer and expert of Wushu (a kind of martial art). His family moved here in 1931. Lu Hefu (1914-1997), the oldest son of Lu Jinggui, a physical scientist, educationalist and academician of Chinese Academy of Science, named as "Father of Nuclear Energy in China" due to his unveiling of A-bomb principles. His research findings in the aspect of hydrodynamics were named as "Lu's Formula of Irreversibility".

Mr. Goldman is the Head of the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Minnesota. He is widely recognized as one of the world's leading experts on superconductivity in thin films. The celebration was held at the Tate Laboratory of Physics, where Hoff Lu's sculpture has enjoyed an honored setting at the entrance since 2004. Under Allen's leadership, the Minnesota portion of documentary "Hoff Lu" was made in 1998.

At yesterday's alumni session, eight former students were there to show their appreciation for Prof. Goldman's guidance in their current careers at the University of Massachusetts, University of Michigan, University of Maryland, University of Chicago, Carleton College, IBM, and El Paso Company. During a discussion on nano-technology, which composed most of the session, Allen answered Mike Lu's question, "Is a Physics revolutionary change coming?" with "We don't know when but something is going to happen" Mike was impressed. The session was hosted by Prof. E. Dan Dahlberg.

There were almost 200 scholars and friends including Prof. Goldman's wife Kathleen, Dean Steve Crouch, Hoff Lu's teacher Al Nier's widow Mrs. Nier, Prof. Walter Johnson and Prof. Chun-Jo Liu who met Hoff Lu during the 1980's. The Physics Department had only one Chinese student in 1941; today many Chinese students study there. "I really don't know how many we have. I only know many, many" the assistant to the Department Head Julie Murphy said.

People remember Hoff Lu Today is the 12th anniversary of the death of Hoff Lu. He is not forgotten. His former Fudan student Jonathan Wu asked Mike Lu to bring a basket of flowers to Hoff Lu's sculpture at First Baptist Academy in Houston. Jonathan stopped by the sculpture on his way across the continental United States to watch the space shuttle in Florida. He told Mike he really appreciated the arrangement and said it was a small token of appreciation and was in memorial of Prof. Lu. Jonathan said he last visited Hoff Lu in 1994 in Shanghai, China. Last October 4th five members of the China Zhejiang Chemical Businessmen Delegation led by Lester Lu also visited Hoff Lu's sculpture with flowers. Meitan County, Guizhou Province, China - Dec. 27, 2007 For immediate release: Lester Lu and wife visit Meitan County In Meitan County there is a small museum marking the site of the old Zhejiang University where Hoff Lu taught and furthered his career in nuclear physics during the Anti-Japanese War in China. After three days of driving with his wife, a TV reporter, and two drivers, Lister Lu arrived to commemorate the newly formed Meitan County Cultura Association of Zhejiang University. Swedish Consul Jan Dryselius spoke of Hoff Lu as the Father of Chinese Nuclear Energy. "He found a way to remain profoundly loyal to both his mother country and to his soul." Professor Wu Shui-ging, Chairman of BRTEF and Hoff Lu historian with 68 articles about Hoff Lu, which included articles about the dispute in the Chinese scientific community, also spoke. Hoff Lu's granddaughter Professor Grace Lu described his continuing influence on her research into Nano technology. Hoff Lu's student Professor Yuan Zhu-shu, the Dean of Nuclear Science of Fudan University, recalled his experience of Hoff Lu's final days in the hospital and how he will never forget it. In total about 10 speakers joined in sharing their memories of Hoff Lu.

Photo: Lu's Family Portrait since 1956 with Lester and Mike Before the commemoration, family and friends, led by Hoff Lu's 4th brother Lu He-xun, 5th brother Lu He-wen, 6th brother Lu He-wei and 2nd son Lester Lu, visited and toured Hoff Lu's old residence at 19 Bei An Boulevard, built in 1931 by Hoff Lu's father Lu Jin-gui, the former secretary of transportation of Northeast China. The house was remodeled recently and may open to the public late.

The article was the first in a Chinese magazine which discussed Hoff Lu's decision to not assist in the development of the Atomic Bomb.

President Robert Bruininks of University of Minnesota said in his letter to Mike Lu today. "World Science" magazine No. 2, 2007 in Shanghai, was just released yesterday with Hoff Lu's photos and selected papers on his famous prediction, and a memorial articles by Prof. Shen Shi under section "Science Master, Spirit Forever." The article described Hoff Lu's one of important book "A Review Talk on High Energy Particle Physics" and how, under her and her colleagues' hard work with the publisher Shanghai Science and Technology, it was quickly edited and published before Hoff Lu visited the United States as Cornell's Distinguished Visiting Professor in Swarthmore College in 1979. The book continues to have great influence in the world of Physics. "Hoff Lu's bright mind and far vision were donated selflessly, exactly and creatively to humanity with a highly respected master's graceful bearing." Two days ago, there was a memorial gathering of dozens of Hoff Lu's brothers, Hoff Lu's students and physicists in Beijing to honor his great achievements in science and education. Hoff Lu's 4th brother Hexuan and 6th brother Hewei(Hua Liu) were invited and gave talks. Prof. Wang Deyun hosted the gathering. Speakers Prof. Wu Shuiqing said, "Hoff Lu is our flag forever." Hoff Lu's student Prof. Zhang Yingping said, "In Hoff Lu's life you can see Truth (Academic), Passion (Moral) and Beauty (Performance Arts of Peking Opera) perfectly united together with him. It was unique in China and the world." It was impressive that Yu Min and Deng Jiaxian were Hoff Lu's students by the talk of Prof. Xu Wanzen because those two leaders of Chinese Nuke didn't mention it in any article before. As a celebrated physicist, educator, and scholar, Professor Hoff Lu devoted his entire life to scientific research and education. During his student days at the University of Minnesota, Hoff Lu studied under the direction of the well-known physicist Alfred O.C. Nier. Among the most remarkable of his achievements was his world famous "equation of irreversibility." In 2004, the University unveiled a bust of Hoff Lu,, which was donated by his sons Michael and Lester and is now displayed at the Tate Laboratory of Physics on the Minneapolis campus. Michael and Lester also established this fund, which will support graduate fellowships in the School of Physics and Astronomy. Contributions to this fund since inception total $50,000, and the 21st Century Graduate Fellowship Match will match the available payout of the fund on a dollar-for-dollar basis. The purpose of their long trip from Shanghai was to celebrate the Historical Mark of Zhejiang University being listed recently on the National Key Culture Relic on the Protected List, No. 6-1051. Formerly Professor, Dr. Hoff Lu had initial research there during the Anti-Japanese war during the 1940's, after he and his wife Gloria Wu returned to China from the U.S.. Photo 1: Richard Lu ( left ) was interviewed by Journalist Gu Jiang ( right ) Richard Lu earned his Masters degree from the University of Minnesota at the same time his older brother Hoff Lu earned his PhD there. During World War II, Hoff Lu returned to China, but Richard Lu remained in the USA and continued working on the designs for US jet fighters. He was on the teams that designed the P-47, F-84, F-103, F-105, F-111B, A-6, C-2, E-2 and the Rainbow Airplane, but his major work was on the F-14 jet fighter, flown by Tom Cruise in the movie "Top Gun". The F-14 had a very distinct identification signature which usually made the enemy turn and run. Also, in 1986 when the US and the People's Republic of China established the Peace Pearl program to upgrade the J-8 fighter for the PLAAF, Richard Lu was called back into service to work on the project. Used by the Navy since 1974, the F-14 has finally been retired this year early after 32 years of great service with honor.

There were 93 delegates from 21 provinces in China, the United Kingdom and Australia. The host was Prof. Wang De-yun. The Chairman Wu Shui-qing gave the annual report of the federation with 11 sections which honored Best of the Year 2004 Top Ten Lists: 10 Best Members, 10 Best Editors, 10 Best papers in Chinese and 10 Best Papers in English. Funding and Governance
It is
sole-funding by the Hoff Lu's family member to the institute. The special
projects may donate by grants from government, corporate and
private sources,
particularly support may from the scientists, historians and others who make
donations to help the work of the institute.
The
institute governor by the law in China and outside of China will govern by
U.S. law.
