91st Anniversary of Hoff Lu's Birth

Tuesday June 7th was the 91st anniversary of Hoff Lu's birth. His family and friends sent flowers to be laid at his sculpture in Houston, Texas and his grave in Shanghai, China. A few days earlier the 50th Hoff Lu Forum was held in Beijing by BRTRF. Also, the Alumni Association of Guang Xi University printed a story on their web site recalling their famous academician Hoff Lu as the father of nuclear energy in China.

On April 3rd a special memorial article written by Luo Zheng-qiu "Meeting Hoff Lu In My Dreams" was posted on the internet at www.xdlbj.com/show.asp?id=1183. Luo Zheng-qiu discusses how he would have liked to talk to Hoff Lu before he died to pick his brain about thoughts and theories which he never published.

Beijing, China - April 1, 2005 for immediate release:

The Timeline of Challenging Einstein's Relativity by Hoff Lu

On April 1, the Xinhua News Agency published on their website a speech by Lester Lu - the Timeline of Challenging Einstein's Relativity by Hoff Lu - made on August 16, 2003 at the 1st Annual Conference of BRTRF, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Einstein's 1905 papers on Special Relativity.  (see http://news.xinhuanet.com/it/2005-04/01/content_2772163.htm )

Einstein is best honored by pushing physics to new heights using new technology. For example, 100 years ago, physicists spent months reviewing published materials in libraries; today the same research has been reduced to hours using the internet. A lot of new technology has given physicists the tools to continue and even surpass Einstein's legacy.

Meanwhile, Issue Eight, Vol 1 (No. 2, 2005) of Matter Regularity (Chinese edition with an English summary) is being published which will discuss the challenges to Relativity, such as, "The Meaning of Mathematics Model of Relativity Theory" by Hu Chang-wei, "Unity of Nucleus and Field-The Thought About the Essence of Nature" by Meng Qing-yong, and "Fire-Dimensional Time-Space and Motion Mechanics" by Huang Xin-wei.

Tianjin, China - March 24, 2005 for immediate release:

Hoff Lu's father and his family

On March 24, 2005, just after the 8th anniversary of the death of Hoff Lu, a popular evening newspaper in the third largest city in China - the Tianjin Tonight News - ran an historical article about Hoff Lu's father Jing Gui Lu and his family history. The is the first time such an article has been published in China positively and fully introducing the family history. Until now such sensitive history couldn't be mentioned. Jing Gui Lu graduated from the University of Illinois in 1917 with a degree in mechanical engineering, paid for by U.S. funding of the war penalty from old China. In 1928 he became a Secretary of Transportation in northeast China. He built several important railroads in the region. His boss, the warlord Zhang Zhuo-lin, and son Young Marshal Zhang Xie-liang, were famous characters in modern Chinese history, especially in anti-Japanese war history. As well as being an accomplished engineer, Jing Gui Lu was an astronomer and a karate expert who wrote books on the subject. Not too many people remember Jing Gui Lu. History books rarely mention his name. His wife, Cui Ke-yan, was a school teacher who graduated in Japan. His father, Shi Yi Lu, was a silk businessman at the end of the 19th century. Together they had six sons and three daughters, all of whom were highly educated in China. Most became quite distinguished in their careers-five professors (engineers), one diplomat and one businessman-including Senior son Hoff Lu, the father of nuclear energy in China. Jing Gui Lu's renowned progeny today includes granddaughter Jia Grace, a Harvard Ph D. and recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award in 2004. The Tonight News article includes many historical photos. It is an article which can make you smile at the change of ages. See www.jwb.com.cn/gb/content/2005-03/24/content_290109.htm

The Seventh issue Vol 1, No 2 (No 1, 2005) "Matter Regularity" (Chinese edition with an English summary) was published in March 2005. The paper may bring a new insight about Relativity, such as the section " A New Experimental Method Enabling to Demonstrate the False Principle of Light Speed Being Constant" and the "Prediction on Experimental Results" by Wang Jian-hua and Wang Xiao-xiang.

That afternoon the Hawaii Dedicates Hoff Lu Conference was held at the East-West Center of the University of Hawaii. Sino-American scholars gathered to honor Hoff Lu' great life. There were special guests from China for this event: President Wang Sheng-hong of Fudan University and nine delegates from China. Keynote speakers included Vice President of the University of Hawaii Neil Souattesk, State Representative Jon Karamatsu, City Director of Economics Dept. Manuel Menendez, Hoff Lu's second son and Chairman of the Hoff Lu Institute Lester Lu, the Director of East-West Center Charles Morris, Editor of Pacific Times Charles Chen, Hoff Lu's fourth brother and former President of Hebei Architectural College Lu He-xuan, and leaders of the Hawaii Chinese community. They each praised Hoff Lu's distinguished career and highlighted his conscience and morals, impressing everyone. Director Menendez also greeted Mike Lu engaged to Patricia Maxin at Kaui on June 11.

After Hoff Lu earned his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and only three days after marrying his wife Gloria Wu, they returned to China because war had broken out with Japan. During the trip, when the ship docked in Honolulu, they borrowed a friend's car to tour the island but got lost. They ended up at the naval base at Pearl Harbor. Military Police stopped and questioned them. After the police learned he was an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota they became very polite and asked him to turn back, wishing him and his wife a safe trip to China. The American soldiers' politeness to the Chinese scholar impressed Hoff Lu, which he mentioned many times. In 1981 someone in Hawaii invited him to return after he finished his term as Distinguished Professor in Swaresmore College. He didn't go and regretted it later.

There were 70 dinner guests at a deluxe Chinese restaurant. Everyone had quite a fun time. When the Mayor declared the day as Hoff Lu Day, everyone clapped excitedly. The chairman of the event Mr. Gu said that Hawaii has been lucky enough to have been visited by three great Chinese men: Sun Yat-sen, Marshal Zhang and Hoff Lu. The City Budget Director Ivan Lui-kwur wishes to have more exchange between Hawaii and China. President Wang said that he also wishes to have more Sino-American relations.
